Every Sunday morning at 9 am Skiff Club members take part in a Time Trial round Ravens Ait. Gathering at the boat shed at 8.30, they are rapidly allocated a boat by Dan and muster by Trowlock Island. At 9 they start rowing at intervals up river as fast as they can, with a time-keeper setting them off and marking their return.

The fastest crew can row the 3.84 mile (6.18km) circuit in around 36 minutes with a good wind behind them, which is ludicrously fast. I went out last week but was delayed by an angler’s fishing line wrapped around my blade. He wasn’t happy and I was even more last than I would have been otherwise.

It is a great way to train for long distance events and to improve fitness in a fun way.
