Tiny and Nancy Knight Doubles at DSPC Saturday 5th May 2018

The ladies and gents doubles events were held over the same 5k course as the previous weekend’s singles, but very different conditions, sunshine from a clear blue sky, a light breeze and temperatures reaching 23oC. This event is in memory of Tiny and Nancy Knight who were members of Dittons from 1923 for many years with the Tiny Knight trophy being awarded annually since 1953 and the Nancy Knight trophy since 1988. There were 20 entrants, with 2 divisions of racing starting at 10.00am and 11.00am.

TSC had 3 entries:-

  • Mary Booth and Eilish Lawlee coxed by Sarah Randall in Ladies Intermediate.
  • Paul Green and Craig Palmer coxed by Sarah Randall in Gents Intermediate
  • Tim Harness and John Pengilly coxed by Dave Wright in Gents Novice.

In the first race, Paul and Craig started well and were leading when unfortunately Craig suffered a ‘blown arm’ on the upstream section and they fell down the field to finish 4th in a time of 29 minutes 52 seconds. Tim and John, rowing together for the first time, made steady progress to finish 4th in the Novice category in a time of 29 minutes 49 seconds.

In the 2nd race, in even warmer conditions, Eilish and Mary, ably coxed by Sarah stormed around the course to win both their category and the Nancy Knight Trophy in a time of 29 minutes 30 seconds. Well done ladies, girl power won the day. All those winter hours on the ergos and on the water training under the supervision of Graeme Mulcahy were well worth it!
