Teddington Reach Regatta & Skiff Championships held on Sunday 26th August 2019

The Skiff Championships and Terddington Reach Regatta was held on the River Thames at The Remenham Club on part of the Henley rowing course. The skiff racing course distance is approximately 750 metres downstream on the Berkshire side of the river from [downstream of]  Henley Bridge.

In contrast with the 2018 event, it was a glorious hot and sunny day with a light breeze. The Skiff Club participants were as listed below

  • MCD Miranda Clements and Riley Clements coxed by Hannah Clements
  • GVD Keith Shore and Mike Lanzer coxed by Gillian Mulcahy
  • GHD Bill Clee and Riccardo Maestri coxed by Fran Kenden
  • GIS Riccardo Maestri
  • GNS John Pengilly
  • GED Neill Harrowell and Mel Day coxed by Gillian Mulcahy
  • MVD Eilish Lawlee  and Keith Shore coxed by John Previte
  • MID Eilish Lawlee and Bill Clee coxed by Sarah Randall.
  • MND Hannah Clements  and John Pengilly coxed by Nicky Painter
  • LIS Eilish Lawlee
  • LND Hannah Clements and Sarah Randall coxed by Miranda Clements.

There were many hard fought and close races on this famous straight stretch of the Thames on one of the hottest days of the year. Mel and Neill, still entrants but racing in novice category, lost their heat by just 3 feet and Hannah and John won their mixed doubles heat by 2 feet before losing out by a length in the semi final.

The following crews won their events:

  • MCD Miranda Clements and Riley Clements coxed by Hannah Clements
  • GVD Keith Shore and Mike Lanzer coxed by Gillian Mulcahy
  • GHD Bill Clee and Riccardo Maestri coxed by Fran Kenden
  • MVD Eilish Lawlee  and Keith Shore coxed by John Previte
  • MID Eilish Lawlee and Bill Clee coxed by Sarah Randall.
  • LIS Eilish Lawlee

The highlights were:  Miranda and Riley retaining their mixed doubles championship title; Eilish, our captain, leading by example by winning 3 events; Keith Shore winning both his veteran events; Bill winning both his doubles events and Riccardo  maintaining his winning run with Bill in the doubles and losing his singles final by only half a length.

This regatta relies on the support of all the skiff racing clubs and many individuals who give up their time to organise and make the event happen. Skiff Club members who helped marshall the skiffs, umpired, stake boated, transported skiffs, etc, included Bill, Graeme, Roger, David  and Roger and Amanda, thank you all. Many Skiff Club members appear on the list of past Skiff Champions, including several of the umpires at today’s event. We trust that this event will continue next year and beyond on this special stretch of the Thames for rowers and scullers of all sorts of boats.

Another good day on and by the river –  and remember that sun cream next time!
